Field Trips

AAS Field Trips – 2024

(Must be a Current Member of AAS)

Trips will include easy, moderate, and strenuous level of effort.  We hope to accommodate the interests and physical condition of all our members.

Saturday January 27, 2024: Special Tour of Albuquerque Museum.

Sunday February 25, 2024: Special Tour of Albuquerque Museum, Coast to Coast to Coast Exhibit with Carol Chamberland as our docent.

Saturday April 27, 2024: Docent led tour of the Allan Hauser Sculpture Garden, south of Santa Fe.

Saturday May 18, 2024: Docent led tour of the Bosque Redondo Memorial at the For Sumner Historic Site.

Saturday July 13, 2024: Hike in the Santa Fe National Forest near Valles Caldera, Rabbit Mountain area, led by member and experienced hiker/guide Earlene Shroyer.

July/August 2024, date to be determined, visit to the Albuquerque Museum’s exhibit “The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts”, Carol Chamberland will be our docent – always an outstanding tour leader.

Sunday October 6, 2024, trip to Tsama Pueblo Site. Mandy Woods, Archeological Conservancy will be our leader. The site is an ancestral Tewa community near Abiquiu and was excavated by Tom Windes and Peter McKenna. limit 20 Members

Saturday October 19, 2024, Hike to an archaeological site with 2 pueblos and a great kiva in the Santa Fe National Forest, led by Forest Service archaeologist, Becky Baisden.

Saturday November 9, 2024, We visit the San Jose de las Huertas old village and pueblo in Placitas, Archaeological Conservancy will provide our docent/leader

2023 Field Trip Summary

Tuesday January 31, 2023: Special Tour of Albuquerque International Airport Facilities, including the original Albuquerque Airport building, now the TSA Headquarters.

Sunday February 5, 2023: Special Docent Tour of the Grounded in Clay Exhibit, MIAC 

Saturday, February 18, 2023: Behind the Scenes tour of the Maxwell Museum Archaeological Collections

Sunday, March 26, 2023:  Field trip to the   Albuquerque Museum Exhibit “Indigenous Art, Culture, and Community”, Carol Chamberland

Saturday, April 15, 2023:  Field trip to the “Foothills Pueblo” site in the Sandias, Jeremy Kulisheck, Santa Fe Forest Service archaeologist

Saturday, April 29, 2023: Field trip to Caja del Rio Plateau, Jeremy Kulisheck, Santa Fe Forest Service archaeologist, Mike Bremer, retired Santa Fe Forest Service archaeologist, Gary Newgent, Site Steward

 Saturday, July 22, 2023: Field Trip to the Behind-the-Scenes tour of the Special Collections at Maxwell Museum, Dr. Kari Schleher, Curator of Archaeology, Maxwell Museum.

Saturday, September 30, 2023: Field Trip to Lion Mountain Community, Blair Mills, Cibola Forest Magdalena District Archaeologist. Visit focused on a cluster of sites scattered along two small ridges and visit to a great Kiva.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday, October 20 -22, 2023: Field Trip to Grant County Archaeological Society, Society members hosted a really informative three-day outing. Friday, we attended a meet and greet dinner with members of the Grant County Archaeological Society (GCAS) members at the Little Toad Creek Brewery & Distillery.  Saturday morning an outstanding docent led tour of the Western New Mexico University Museum, which maintains the largest collection of Mimbres artifacts in the world.  Saturday afternoon we toured the Mimbres Culture Heritage Site and the GCAS’s research library, artifact collections, and lab/workroom comprising the core of the Mimbres Archaeological Research and Educational Center (MAREC).  Saturday evening, the GCAS hosted a get-to-know-you potluck dinner for the AAS group.  Sunday Morning GCAS members led a field trip to the Dragonfly petroglyph area.
