Field Trip # 2. Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge Petroglyphs
Leader: Carol Chamberland
Meeting Time: 7:45; Depart 8:00am Approx. Finish Trip Time: 3:00pm (includes travel time/miles: 52 min/57miles one way)
# of Participants: 20
Description: Far corner of the Refuge, where rock walls are covered in ancient petroglyphs and pottery shards underfoot indicate unexcavated pueblos.
Difficulty & Recommendations: According to Jeannine (SNWR’s Visitor Services Manager): “1 ½ hour travel on dirt roads in Government vehicles from visitor center to site. Short, less than 1-mile level walk plus either a scramble over rocks or a sandy hike over a hill (walking stick …useful), hats, sturdy shoes. Bring lunch/water. No facilities at site”.
Special Considerations: Riding in government vehicles 20 minutes on the highway, 1hr 10 minutes on rough dirt road to the site.
