Field Trips

Pueblo de las Milpas

August 18, 2017

Our next field trip is to Pueblo de las Milpas, also known as AS-8.  It is a 46-room pueblo dating to the 13th century.  Located on a mesa on BLM land between San Ysidro and the Ojito Wilderness, it was excavated beginning in 1975 by the Albuquerque Archaeological Society, culminating in a 1998 report.  The road to the site is no longer passable, but we will drive to the base of the mesa and hike up.  Be prepared for a little exertion, and bring plenty of water. The hike is about a third of a mile, with an elevation gain of about 200 feet.

Our field trips are open to all current members of the Albuquerque Archaeological Society. For more information, email trips@abqarchaeology.org

  1. Hello, I’m a archeology student up here in Alaska. I’ll be visiting your area from December 5th- the 15th. I was hoping to beable to learn as much about the sites in this region during this time. Will you be having any field trips or active sites during this time period? If so I’d love to tag along.

    Thank you

    • Hello David. Unfortunately December is not a month that we schedule field trips due to weather. Although, Coronado Historic Site and Jemez Historic site will be open throughout your visit and a joint pass can be purchased at either site for $7. Thank you for your interest, and we look forward to seeing you.
