Winter Indoor Field Trip: Maxwell and Hibben Special Collection Tour

 Hosted by Special Collection Managers: Meghan Truckey and Karen Price

Because of timing this is an advanced notice of the tour of the UNM Special Collections at the Maxwell and Hibben Centers. Sign-up is starting now (instructions below).

You will be seeing collections from around the world in the disciplines of archaeology and ethnology.

Hibben: We will be seeing the Anthropology/Archaeology Collections consisting of the pot room and drawers. As a special bonus, we will have stations relating to past lectures: Kuaua and Santiago artifacts and pottery presented by Carolyn Gilmore and Deborah Ellis (AAS members, Bice Award winners), 2 boxes of bones collected from Kuaua and where they were located in the pueblo presented by Ethan Ortega (AAS Vice president) and six large corrugated ollas (storage jars) and 2 Mesa Verde mugs from the Collection Box B of the Bolack Site, plus materials and the techniques used in processing artifacts presented by Karen Armstrong (AAS member).

Maxwell: Ethnology collections consisting of Southwest and International textiles, baskets, and costumes.

Limitation: 30 participants (Current AAS Members Only)

Meet: Morning tour

Fee: No charge, but donations are welcomed

Length of Tour: 2 hours

Parking: On-street parking

  • After you have signed up, an Information Sheet will be emailed to you giving the time and place to meet and any additional information.
  • If you decide not to attend after you’ve signed up, please contact Pat Harris, Coordinator promptly since we expect to have a waiting list.

  1. Hello, I’m a archeology student up here in Alaska. I’ll be visiting your area from December 5th- the 15th. I was hoping to beable to learn as much about the sites in this region during this time. Will you be having any field trips or active sites during this time period? If so I’d love to tag along.

    • Hello David. Unfortunately December is not a month that we schedule field trips due to weather. Although, Coronado Historic Site and Jemez Historic site will be open throughout your visit and a joint pass can be purchased at either site for $7. Thank you for your interest, and we look forward to seeing you.
